Palma to Soller railway, 31 March 2012

We started our tip to Majorca extremely early and arrived in Palma at 9 am. From the airport we tool a bus to Placa d'Espanya to board the veteran train to Soller, originally constructed to transport the famous Soller oranges to Palma for export.
According our guidebook the best way to travel to Port de Soller is to take the Palma to Soller railway. The train leaves from the Placa d'Espanya railway station in the centre of Palma and slowly winds its way through 28km of beautiful countryside to the town of Soller. The journey takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.
On arrival in Soller town you'll need to change from the train to a tram to take you to the Port de Soller.
Ever since 1912 the Sóller railway has been running a daily train service along the 27.3 km route between Palma de Mallorca and Sóller, without interruption. From 1913 it has also run the tram service along the 4.9 kilometres from Sóller and the Port of Sóller.

The train stopped for a view over Soller
Sóller is a town on the north-eastern coast of Mallorca. The valley is famous for its orange orchards, its terraces of thousand-year-old orange trees, its climate and its light, resulting in a fascinating place that captivates millions of visitors every year.

We had our lunch at an old hotel next to the train station, recommended by our guidebook: “Walk and eat in Majorca”

To get to Port de Soller and our hotel we had to continue with the tram
